Speak for Change:  Advocates Unite

DJ's at Holiday BallSpeak for Change, a self-advocate group, is comprised of people who experience disabilities who desire to eliminate societal oppression by bringing awareness of disability related issues that stifle their rights as American citizens.  Originating with Hope, Speak for Change has expanded its membership to any community member who experiences a disability. All that is required is the desire to make a positive impact on the lives of people who experience disabilities.

This is an excellent avenue for people to share and have their voice heard on any issues identified by the group.  They are interested in sharing their perspective and making recommendations for change to groups such as agency personnel, parents, civic groups, elected officials and government employees.

Among many topics, the group has discussed “what makes a home” for people who experience disabilities and live in supported housing, making suggestions for hiring practices for social service agencies. Aaron Prevost, Vice President of Speak Up stated, Speak for Change “provides me the opportunity to learn the skills I need to have my voice heard to make a change for the betterment of my life and others who have disabilities.”
