Julie MettlerDirector of Community Support Services (Anchorage)Since Julie started working at Hope in 1996, she has dedicated her career to making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities and their families. Initially drawn to Hope through friends who also worked here, Julie has held a variety of roles over the years and now serves as the Director of Community Support Services for the Anchorage region. In this role, she oversees the provision of services in Assisted Living Homes and for children and adults in their own homes or with their families. Julie began working at Hope as a Live-in DSP. She filled many direct support roles, as well as care coordination roles prior to becoming a supervisor. She helped initially form what was to become Hope Studios and Gallery, and the Discovery Center and her heart is still enmeshed in the studio concept. One of the values that resonates with Julie most is Hope's emphasis on relationships. She understands the importance of having a support system, particularly for the many individuals who have limited social connections outside of paid staff. She believes in the power of maintaining existing relationships and building new ones, and supporting individuals to have a fulfilling and enriching life. Outside of work, Julie values her friends and consider them to be like family. She enjoys spending time with her wife, and together they enjoy traveling, camping, fishing, gathering with friends around a campfire, and hanging out with their Boston Terriers. She also has a creative side and a sense of humor, the combination of which occasionally results in her writing haikus that may push the boundaries of what’s appropriate. |
